Kudzu: The Vegetative Cancer
Kudzu, the Japanese vine, was introduced to the United States in the 1930’s as a way for farmers to stop soil erosion. Kudzu is an invasive and noxious weed. It climbs over trees or shrubs and grows so rapidly that it kills them by heavy shading. A kudzu vine can grow
as much as a foot per day and sixty feet during a growing season. The plant spreads by sending out runners, and vines can take root wherever a node touches the ground. Until now nothing was effective to control kudzu being resistant to many herbicides, and some make it to grow better.
